One of the great joys of worshipping with God's people each Lord's Day is seeing men, women and children lifting their voices to "sing praises to the Lord." The practice of praise is a reverberation of what has taken place throughout the history of God's people, and every generation brings with them a song, as it were, to offer on the altar of praise.
Among the many attributes of which He is worthy of praise, one in particular resonates ever stronger with the passage time - God's faithfulness. For the nation of Israel, their song of praise was to their Lord who kept the promises He gave to their forefathers...
“For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set His love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that He swore to your fathers..." (Deuteronomy 7:6-7)
God certainly kept His word, and in the fullness of time a generation would arise to see with their own eyes the fulfillment of those promises. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the testimony of God's faithfulness which continues to this day. Better yet, it is a promise not only to one people, but to all peoples, and to all generations!
"Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations." (Deuteronomy 7:9)
Brenton Brown, describing the inspiration for his song "A Thousand Generations", says it this way:
"God makes a promise to Israel - a covenantal promise, the old covenant - and it's dependent on their actions. But the covenant that God makes with us now in the new covenant is dependent on the actions of Jesus."
Thanks be to God for the gift of His Son, who has perfectly fulfilled the terms of the covenant, and has given His people the benefits. We stand in a long line of those who never cease to give praise to the One who is faithful, and whose lovingkindness knows no end.
You have been faithful to a thousand generations
Slow to anger, swift to bless
Your hand has guided us through every situation
Your loving kindness hasn't failed us yet
God, You are my God, You are my God
I will live to sing Your praises
God, joy of my heart, You are my rock
You are faithful through the ages
The day will come when every
Eye on earth will see You
When every heart and every voice will say
That You are perfect in Your wisdom and Your justice
God how we long to see that glorious day
You're God of heaven's armies, You're God of galaxies
Valleys rise up to meet You, the mountains bow their knees
Creation stands in wonder at all that You've achieved
And You have set Your love on me
Though You may lead us through the valley of the shadow
We will rise to see You face to face
And we will gather with the saints in that great city
Where every sorrow will be washed away
