“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)
There are many options for people to invest in: stocks and bonds, money markets, cd’s, land, homes, art, gold, etc. Some of these options have a greater return, while some of them have a smaller return but are a more safe investment. But what about an investment that has lasting and eternal significance? I'm not talking about a long-term retirement investment; I’m talking about investing into the next generation. Raising up the next generation to be ambassadors for Christ, catalysts in the world for the kingdom of God, young men and women who go into the world and shine brightly for Jesus.
You have an opportunity to disciple young students in their walk with the Lord. Many of you can probably remember some of your youth leaders when you were growing up and the impact they had on your life. Now it’s your turn.
Right now the biggest need in Student Ministry is leaders. Some of you are worried that you aren’t cool enough or don’t know how to disciple a young student. If you are a follower of Jesus then you are qualified to be a Discipler. A.W. Tozer said, “Only a disciple can make a disciple.” Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” (1 Cor. 11:1) And he wrote to the Philippians, “Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.” (Phil. 3:17) To disciple is to walk along side, to be an example someone can look to and see what is right, and to help navigate the trials and worries of life as we point them to Christ. One of the most rewarding aspects of being a youth leader is watching a goofy jr. higher become a mature leader who loves and lives for Christ. It’s hard, it’s tiring at times, and it’s a sacrifice, but it is worth it.
Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone and disciple young men and women in their faith? Are you willing to sacrifice personal time and comfort to spend time shaping the next generation to live for Christ? I truly believe the youth are the church of today, not tomorrow. And the time to invest in them is now! The world is bombarding our youth with views that are so contrary to the scriptures, pointing to people as role models whose lives are so messed up, and praising wicked acts as if they were normal and even good. It is no wonder that this generation is so self-centered, self-focused, and lost.
The youth need your help. They need people to look up to and help walk with them through life. They need people to encourage them to do the right thing and are real role models whose goal in life is to bring glory to God in everything they do, say, and think. You have an opportunity to invest in something that has eternal significance, the lives of our youth. Are you going to pass it up?
If you are interested in serving as a volunteer in Student Ministry, I would love to talk to you.
