Since its earliest days, the church has affirmed some basic truths - the Triune nature of the God-head, Christ's virgin birth, His crucifixion, death and resurrection, the universal Spirit-united church, bodily resurrection, eternal life and so on. In an effort to preserve and teach these foundational truths, our brothers and sisters in the early church compiled the "Apostles' Creed". It asks the believer to respond to the question, "What do you believe"? And it answers:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic (universal) church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

Undergirding these essential, explicit truths lies an important distinction. The Apostles' Creed, by its very nature, calls us beyond a personal reflection of our faith. It calls us to acknowledge a faith shared - a communion - a unified response to the truths we hold most dear. In this way, it removes the singular "I believe" and transforms it into "we believe." As the Apostle Paul reminds us in his letter to the Ephesians, we share in this declaration together because we have been called to share it:

There is one body and one Spirit — just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call — one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Eph. 4:4-6)

Ultimately, our faith is defined not by a creed, but in accordance with God's Word. As we gather corporately around the "faith once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 1:3), the Apostles' Creed is but a tool to help us remember, affirm and teach these truths to one another.
